The Civic Youth Fellowship gives young Edmontonians from diverse communities opportunities to build leadership skills, learn about public service and contribute to real City work.
The Fellowship provides equity-deserving youth from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to apply for an internship with the City. This internship occurs over several weeks between the spring and summer months. During this time, they have the opportunity to:
This program is in direct response to the City’s Anti-racism Strategy, Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Municipal Response Plan and Anti-Black Racism Action Plan, where recommendations called for the City to have stronger connections to equity-deserving communities - specifically youth - and provide opportunities for engagement in and learning about municipal government.
Each winter, the City will promote the opportunity through our community partners, the City’s social channels and through our contacts at various post secondary institutions across the city.
Candidates must be between the ages of 18-30. Post-secondary education is a strong asset.
The typical format of the internship includes 4 training sessions with community partners, as well as opportunities to network with community leaders and learn valuable skills for working in the public sector.
Short-listed candidates are required to create pitch videos and speed network with the participating offices (City Council members and City Executives) to determine the best fits for the various placements. Once the matches have been made, the youth join the City of Edmonton teams. The length of the internship may range from 8-10 weeks.
Since the completion of the 2023 program, 6 of the 13 interns have secured part-time or full-time employment, including 4 within Council Offices, Administration or another government policy office.
