Fireworks can be extremely dangerous and disruptive to individuals, property and the environment if not used or handled correctly.

Unpermitted use of Fireworks is Prohibited

The unpermitted use of fireworks is prohibited within city limits.

Only professionals (Natural Resources Canada certified) with an approved firework permit issued by Edmonton Fire Rescue Services are allowed to use fireworks in the city of Edmonton.

Fireworks Use

Any use of fireworks requires proper permitting under the City of Edmonton bylaws.

Apply for Permit

To apply for a permit to use fireworks, you must email a completed checklist with all applications to Edmonton Fire Rescue Services at:

Processing could take up to 10 working days upon submission for a permit to be processed.

Conditions and Consequences

The use of fireworks without a permit is in violation of the City of Edmonton bylaws and may result in fines or prosecution.

Conditions

  1. The person to whom a firework permit is issued shall comply with all conditions outlined on the permit.
  2. A copy of the permit must be on-site during use and presented to officials upon request.
  3. An approved firework permit is only valid for one event.
  4. Work with a Fire Prevention Officer to pre-approve the site for your community or public event.

Consequences

Failure to comply with all applicable codes, regulations, bylaws, and permitting surrounding the use of fireworks within the City of Edmonton is illegal and subject to enforcement which can include fines of up to $10,000.

Criminal charges can also be laid depending on the circumstances which can result in a criminal record, fines, and the possibility of jail time.

If you suspect that there is a fire or if someone needs help, call 9-1-1 immediately.

Please contact 3-1-1 with firework concerns or complaints, or reach out to the Edmonton Police Service’s non-emergency line at 780-423-4567 or #377 from any mobile device to report the illegal use of fireworks. These phone numbers will follow up on the reported information.
