Commercial Electrical Permits

Online permit system

An Online Electrical Permitting system came into operation in 2012. With this system, electrical contractors can apply and pay for a new electrical permit (both residential and commercial), as well as book inspections.

Do I need a permit?

Anyone doing any electrical system installation should consult the EPCOR Power Connection Process guide, which has details on setting up power in a new location or changing an existing service. 

The requirement for an Electrical Permit when you install, alter or add to an electrical system applies to all residential, commercial, industrial and institutional installations.

All new electrical installations require a permit, including:

  • New construction
  • Renovations/alterations
  • Electrical service upgrades
  • Fire alarm systems
  • Lighting retrofits
  • Any addition to an electrical system, including but not limited to:
    • Adding new circuits/wiring for receptacles and/or lighting
    • Repair/replacement of aluminium wiring
    • Solar voltaic systems and electric signs

Do I need to submit plans and drawings?

Plans and drawings must be submitted for all installations with a value of $50,000 or more.

Single line drawings with all pertinent information must be submitted for service upgrades of 400 amps and larger.

Plans and drawings may be requested for any installation depending on its scope and nature.

Requirements for obtaining electrical permits:

  1. The Contractor must meet one of the following requirements:
    • Have an Electrical Masters Certificate in good standing with the Alberta Electrical Masters Provincial Program
    • Have a Restricted Electrical Masters certificate in good standing with the Alberta Electrical Masters Provincial Program and be working within the scope of the restricted master electrician's certification
    • Be a Sign Installation Technician working within the scope permitted by the Apprenticeship and Industry Training Act
  2. The Contractor must have a valid business license with the City of Edmonton.
  3. Plans and drawings must be submitted for all installations with a value of $50,000 or more.
  4. Single line drawings with all pertinent information must be submitted for service upgrades of 400 amps and larger.
  5. The Contractor must either:
    • Fill out the Application Form, including payment information, and fax or come into our office (contact information below), or
    • If the Contractor has an online account, they can apply and pay for the permit online.

Fees

    Electrical contractors must apply to have this electrical permit assigned to them.

When should I book an inspection?

A permit must be obtained prior to booking an inspection. An adult (18 years+) must be present for inspections in occupied dwellings.

Book a rough-in inspection when the installation is complete, but not covered. If the installation is covered before the rough-in inspection, the inspector may ask for the area to be re-opened. Book the final inspections when the installation and project is completed. Some installations may require only one inspection, while others may require more than two. Please contact the electrical inspection section (see contact information below) to confirm.

How do I book an inspection?

After the work has been completed, you can book an inspection by:

  • Calling 311, or if outside of Edmonton, 780-442-5311; or
  • If you are a contractor with an online account, you can book your inspection online.

Extra inspections

A fee of $240 shall be assessed for every re-inspection required as a result of any of the following:

  • No address on site, building or suite as applicable
  • Inspector unable to access the building after having been requested to inspect
  • Project not ready for inspection after a request for inspection has been made
  • Previously identified deficiency has not been corrected after a request for inspection has been made
  • Previously identified deficiency has not been corrected when a reasonable time period has elapsed (typically 30 days) and a request for inspection has been initiated by the inspector or POSSE system
  • Approved plans have not been submitted, if required, after a request for inspection has been made
