The 2029 Edmonton Election will take place on Monday, October 15, 2029. The campaign period for the 2029 Edmonton Election is January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2029.
The first step for Edmontonians who want to run for Mayor, City Councillor, Edmonton Public School Board or Edmonton Catholic School Division Trustee is to submit a notice of intent to run.
After submitting a notice of intent, candidates are required to file campaign disclosure statements with Edmonton Elections.
Candidate Eligibility
To be eligible for nomination as a candidate, an individual must be:
- At least 18 years of age
- A Canadian citizen
- A resident of the City of Edmonton for at least 6 consecutive months before nomination day
- Not otherwise ineligible or disqualified

Separate school board trustee candidates have additional requirements under section 74(3) of the Education Act.
Notice of Intent
Prospective candidates must submit a written notice of intent to be nominated before they can accept campaign contributions or incur campaign expenses. This can be done at any time during the campaign period.
The notice can be a letter or an email. It must include the following information:
- First and last name
- Residential address, including postal code
- Contact information (personal email address, phone number and mailing address, if different from above)
- Address of place(s) where candidate records are maintained
- Address of the place to which communications may be sent
- Name and address of financial institution(s) used for campaign contributions
- Name(s) of signing authorities for campaign account(s)
- Intended jurisdiction of nomination (City of Edmonton, Edmonton School Division or Edmonton Catholic Separate School Division)

Nomination Requirements
To appear on the ballot in the 2029 Edmonton Election, candidates must submit a nomination package to the Returning Officer. The nomination period for the 2029 Edmonton Election begins on January 1, 2029. Nomination forms and detailed instructions will be available in late-2028.
Signage on Private Property
Signs may be displayed on private property with the permission of the property owner, provided it complies with Zoning Bylaw requirements regarding placement and size.
Some condo buildings do not allow signs even when the unit is privately owned. Check your condo building regulations.
Signage on Road Right of Way
Candidates may place campaign signs on City of Edmonton road right-of-way beginning on the Monday following Labour Day in an election year, and have three days to remove signs after Election Day.
