City Praises Alberta Decision on Search Fee

August 25, 2011

Mayor Stephen Mandel received notice today from the Government of Alberta that the Province has suspended a planned implementation of a $15 fee on motor vehicle searches.

“I am extremely pleased that the Alberta Government has listened to the City of Edmonton’s concerns,” said Mayor Mandel. “Our thanks go to Premier Ed Stelmach and Service Alberta Minister Heather Klimchuk for demonstrating this governments’ responsiveness on issues that have an impact on Alberta municipalities.”

The service fee was to be implemented September 1, 2011. The Province informed the Mayor that any service fee increase will be considered in consultation with municipalities as part of Alberta’s budget 2012/13 review process.

“Our request was to be involved in the consultation, and now we look forward to working with the government to find a suitable approach for the Province and for municipalities,” said Mayor Mandel.

The proposed Service Alberta fee would have meant additional charges of $5.9 million on photo enforcement tickets and $4.4 million on bylaw parking tickets in the City of Edmonton.
