City Suspends Bar Licence After Weekend Shooting
March 29, 2010
The City of Edmonton is exercising its emergency powers under the Municipal Government Act to immediately suspend the business license of the Gingur Sky Bar & Grill for 14 days.
The City is using these emergency powers according to Section 551(1) of the Municipal Government Act which states that “…in an emergency a municipality may take whatever actions or measures are necessary to eliminate the emergency … emergency includes a situation in which there is imminent danger to public safety….”
The bar owners were informed of the decision by the City in a letter sent on Monday March 29, 2010.
On March 28, 2010 at 1:49am, a shooting occurred at the Gingur Sky Bar & Grill. Four patrons were struck by random bullets and were injured. This was the tenth serious event and eighth shooting at Gingur Sky since 2008 and the second shooting in just over a month.
The City has taken this step based on imminent danger to public safety and “the recent escalation of dangerous occurrences, the serious harm to patrons, the unknown nature of responsible parties, the unknown motives behind the shooting and the ongoing investigation.”
The bar is located at 15505-118 Avenue.
The City will not be commenting further on the suspension.
