Congestion Relief for LRT Commuters

LRT four-car train

March 21, 2011

Edmonton Transit has added four-car trains to its service during peak travel times to address heavy commuter volumes and alleviate congestion on the LRT.

Moving from three-car trains to four-car trains in peak hours will increase capacity by 12%.

“The expansion of the LRT system over the past year is transforming Edmonton. Increasing numbers of people are using public transit to move effectively and affordably across our city in a more environmentally friendly way,” said Bob Boutilier, General Manager, Transportation Department. “The recent upgrades now allow us to better serve the increase in riders.”

The LRT system went from 51 cars in service during peak hours, able to carry approximately 6,700 customers per hour each way, to the new ability to have 57 cars carrying about 7,500 customers per hour.

For the past nine months, Edmonton Transit has been working diligently to upgrade the power systems and the signal systems on the northeast part of the line. As a result, the LRT line is now able to handle the power requirements of four-car SD160 trains.

Currently, ETS is able to operate 12 four-car trains and three three-car trains each day.  The maximum number of cars in service will remain at 57 until mid-2013 when the vehicle retrofit programs are completed, which will allow 60 cars in service, all running in four-car trains.
