September 30, 2011

An employee of a private company died today after sustaining an injury while working at a City facility.

At approximately 9:30am a truck driver for a private construction firm was injured while working at the Transportation Services Northeast Operations Yard at 13003-56 St. Emergency medical services were contacted immediately and the driver was transported to hospital. The worker succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

City of Edmonton Occupational Health & Safety is assisting the Province of Alberta with its investigation of this incident. The incident did not involve any City of Edmonton staff or equipment.

The City uses the Transportation Services Northeast Operations Yard as a base for transportation operations in the northeast quadrant of Edmonton. The private company was accessing the yard as part of a routine sand-mixing operation in preparation for winter road maintenance.
