Edmonton Celebrates International Day of Biodiversity

May 21, 2010

Activities, announcement planned for family event

Celebrate the International Day of Biodiversity with indoor and outdoor activities for the whole family.

Date:  Saturday May 22, 2010
Time:  Noon – 6pm
Location:  Molson Square (immediately south of Stanley Milner Library)

The City of Edmonton, graduates from its Master Naturalist program and local conservation groups will lead fun, hands-on activities from noon to 3pm that include:

  • tips on how to create a garden to attract native wildlife
  • hands-on planting demonstrations
  • learn how identify beneficial backyard bugs

From 3 to 6pm in the Edmonton Room (basement of the library) there will be a screening of the IMAX film Lost Worlds: Life in the Balance, and a World Cafe conversation about how citizens can build a community through the protection of biodiversity in Edmonton.

“In addition to these activities, we are also excited to announce the Edmonton Natural Areas Acquisition Strategy, which will establish a legacy and commitment to biodiversity management for years to come,” says Grant Pearsell, Director for the Office of Natural Areas, City of Edmonton. "The Natural Areas Acquisition Strategy commits the City to allocating an additional $20 million to accelerate the acquisition and protection of some of Edmonton’s highest biodiversity areas throughout the city."

This initiative supports the City’s long term environmental strategic plan: The Way We Green.

International Day of Biodiversity was first created in 1993 by the UN General Assembly to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. Then in 2000, May 22 was officially designated as the day of celebration. Last year over 35 countries participated in International Day of Biodiversity activities.
