Intersection Safety Camera Speeding Tickets Cancelled

January 14, 2011

Effective immediately, the City of Edmonton’s Transportation Department and the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) have cancelled the distribution and prosecution of all outstanding Intersection Safety Camera (ISC) speeding tickets.

The ISC tickets, often referred to as “Speed on Green” tickets, are issued for speeding violations that are automatically captured by an intersection safety camera as a vehicle speeds through an intersection.

Of the 245,000 violations detected on intersection safety cameras last year, 26 could not be properly verified. While the majority of these unverifiable violations were stopped at the quality control and screening stage, one was accidentally mailed out.

Anyone currently in possession of an ISC speeding ticket should NOT pay the ticket. Tickets that combine an intersection speeding violation with a red light violation are also being cancelled.

This technical issue does not involve tickets issued for a red light infraction, or photo radar tickets taken outside of intersection areas. These tickets are valid, will continue to be processed, and must be paid or dealt with in court.

People seeking clarification on whether their ticket is an ISC speeding ticket can check this sample ticket or visit the Edmonton Police Service website at http://www.edmontonpolice.ca/ for an illustration of an ISC ticket.

Several steps are being taken to address the unverifiable readings issue. A complete technical review of the speed measurement function within all the intersection safety cameras is now underway.

In addition, an assessment of the pre-mailing quality control process is being conducted, to understand how the unverifiable tickets were distributed. Every ticket undergoes five separate review steps before being mailed out.

Once the technical issue with the speed measurement function within the camera is resolved, all cameras will be re-certified, and the speed enforcement function reactivated.
