This year marks the 25th year of Front Yards in Bloom, a cherished tradition for gardeners, yard enthusiasts and community members. The program is a collaborative effort by the City of Edmonton and our partners to help cultivate Edmonton’s community spirit and enhance the city’s beauty.
Since 1999, Front Yards in Bloom has played an important role in bringing communities together and we encourage Edmontonians to get outside this year, onto their balconies and into their communities to participate by submitting nominations and voting for finalists.
A Front Yard in Bloom is a yard that showcases the best of nature, along with some human ingenuity! There have been so many beautiful gardens submitted over the years in each category and the efforts of gardeners are impressive.
Everyone can nominate their neighbours, family and friend’s yards in 6 categories: general yards, edible yards, natural yards, tiny yards, balconies in bloom and the public space category.
At the end of the summer, the top 3 gardeners from each category will be awarded at the annual Edmonton in Bloom Awards ceremony.
Anyone 18 years or older can nominate a front yard.
Nominations are open May 21-July 1, 2024
Voting opens August 12-18, 2024
The final round of Front Yards in Bloom judging happens online during public voting week when people can cast their vote for their favourite finalists across all nomination categories. The season’s winners are announced the day after public voting closes.
You do not need a green thumb or space to decorate to get involved with Front Yards in Bloom. Volunteer and be a part of celebrating the hard work of your fellow community members.

Founded in 1999 by the Edmonton Horticultural Society, Canadian Union of Postal Workers and the City of Edmonton, the Front Yards in Bloom was modelled after a similar program in Kitchener, Ontario.
The program received 150 nominations in its first year and has since grown into the largest program of its kind in Canada. Funding has come entirely from sponsorship and donors.
Volunteer engagement is key to the program's success, with volunteers delivering thousands of signs to nominated yards annually each summer. Winning yards receive an award at the Edmonton in Bloom Awards each year, following a round of public voting.
As our city grows, Front Yards in Bloom evolves alongside it. Over the years, the program's nomination categories have expanded to create room for more recognition and celebration. This evolution reflects the creativity and innovation happening citywide to enhance environmental resilience and food security, as well as the growing diversity of housing types that Edmontonians will increasingly call home in the future.
