Street Sweeping Truck

In spring, the City clears debris and dust from roads, bike lanes and major pathways, making them cleaner and safer for all modes of transportation. The whole process can take up to 8 weeks, weather permitting.

Residents are required to move their vehicles so that City crews have plenty of room to clear sand and debris from boulevards and streets. A parking ban will be in place for the week crews will be active in each neighbourhood.

Residents can know when crews are scheduled for their neighbourhood by viewing the Street Cleaning Map and watching for temporary, white signage placed at main entrances to the neighbourhood. Residents can also subscribe to Service Notifications and receive communications on when their neighbourhood is scheduled and completed.

A Parking Ban is in effect from 7am to 7pm Monday through Friday for the week crews are active in each neighbourhood. Failure to move your vehicle during the Parking Ban may result in a $250 ticket. Crews may arrive at any time during the week. Parking may resume on evenings and overnights as well as once a neighbourhood is completed.

What You Need to Know

  • Watch for signage at main entrances of each neighbourhood at least 24 hours prior to the week cleaning is scheduled. The temporary, white signs indicate the week scheduled for sweeping.
  • When a Parking Ban is in place, vehicles must be removed from roadways.
    • The Parking Ban is from 7am to 7pm Monday through Friday.
    • Vehicles not moved may be ticketed and the roadway may not be cleaned.
    • Parking may resume once a roadway is marked completed on the online map.
  • Neighbourhoods can take up to 5 days to be swept. Crews may arrive at any time during the scheduled week.
  • Residential roads are swept between 7am-7pm on weekdays.
  • Major roads and boulevards are swept 24 hours a day and often overnight to minimize the impact on traffic.
  • Residents that use drive ramps in front of their home must remove them during sweeping as they can impact completion of an area. The City is not responsible for any damage that may occur if ramps are left out.

Street Sweeping Process

  • Crews first sweep boulevards and hard surface areas adjacent to roads and move sand and other debris into the path of street sweepers
  • Residential roads are swept during the day
  • The City has measures in place to minimize dust, but street sweepers can still create dusty conditions that reduce visibility; if you see dust, slow down and drive for conditions
  • Always give our equipment plenty of space - in front, behind and on both sides
  • When crews are scheduled to be in your residential area, obey the parking ban and move your vehicles off the street

Accessible Parking Spaces

Vehicles in accessible parking spaces with visible accessible parking placards or vehicles permitted to be parked in accessible parking spaces will not be subject to the ban.

Any vehicles parked without proper authorization in those zones will be fined.

Year-round Street Sweeping

  • Spring Sweep takes place from April to June 1 under the Roadway Cleaning Policy, which also includes summer sweeping at night from June 1 to the end of October. Summer sweep is done at a smaller scale.
  • Following Spring Sweep, crews continue to respond to notifications in areas that require additional sweeping. Residents are encouraged to call 311 to report any areas with heightened levels of debris.
