Wildfire Evacuations

The City of Edmonton has responded to a request for assistance from the Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) to support a wildfire evacuation. A state of local emergency has been declared and residents in the Town of Jasper and visitors of Jasper National Park have evacuated.

Evacuation Support Location

The City of Edmonton is operating a Rapid Emergency Support Terminal* (REST) for evacuees from Jasper and Jasper National Park.

Location: Kennedale Site Building #2, 12814-58 Street (open 24 hours)

Services include:

Registration and reception
Parking
Coordination of lodging and food allowance for Jasper residents and workers
Coordination of lodging for tourists and visitors
Temporary rest
Washrooms
Emergency clothing and hygiene items, if needed
Small, pre-packaged snacks and water (meal service is not available on-site)
Pet support (on-site temporary, short-term daycare available if needed)
Health services (8am-6pm)
Mental Health and addiction support (8am-6pm)
Hope Mission (9am-5pm)
Service Canada (8am-4pm)
Insurance agencies (as needed)
Canada Revenue Agency (beginning July 29)

_{*A support terminal provides evacuees with access to all the services they need while they are displaced from their homes, but then directs individuals to hotels for accommodation versus remaining on-site for extended periods of time during an evacuation.}

Funding Allowance

Jasper residents and workers will be provided with a debit card or e-transfer with a funding allowance based on the number of household members.

Tourists and visitors are not eligible for this allowance which is funded by the Town of Jasper. Residents of other countries requiring assistance should reach out to their Embassy or Consular Office.

Registration Information

Evacuees are encouraged to come directly to Kennedale Site upon arrival in Edmonton, where they can register in-person to receive access to City of Edmonton-provided supports, services and amenities.

Phone and online registration are not available at this time. If evacuees need City of Edmonton support, they must register in-person, even if they have registered online with the Government of Alberta.

If evacuees arriving in Edmonton are not in need of immediate support, they can register online with the Government of Alberta. Registering with the Government of Alberta is important to ensure evacuees receive future situational updates and information on available services. Evacuees can also call the Government of Alberta contact centre at 310-4455 for assistance.

Additional Evacuee Supports

Transit Service

Evacuee wristbands provided at Kennedale REST site will be considered valid fare on all Edmonton Transit bus and LRT routes as well as on Strathcona County, St. Albert, Fort Saskatchewan, Leduc and Spruce Grove transit until the end of this evacuation.

City of Edmonton Facilities and Attractions

Registered evacuees with wristbands will receive free admission to all City of Edmonton recreation and leisure centres (find a recreation centre by selecting a quadrant and/or amenities) where they can shower and access recreation facilities.

The wristbands will also provide free admission to the Edmonton Valley Zoo, Muttart Conservatory and John Janzen Nature Centre.

Animal Care

Animal Care and Control provides on-site temporary, short-term animal support while evacuees register and access services.

Donations

The City of Edmonton is not equipped to accept on-site donations at this time. The Emergency Support Response Team provides all the supplies that are immediately needed.

Any companies, individuals or organizations that would like to offer support to those impacted by the wildfires, can email their offers to EmergencySupportOffers@gov.ab.ca.

The Edmonton Humane Society is accepting monetary donations and supplies for pets as part of its wildfire evacuation support.

The Canadian Red Cross is accepting monetary donations as part of its 2024 Alberta Fire appeal. Learn more at Canadian Red Cross.

Volunteering

The Emergency Support Response Team provides all staffing and we do not require volunteers.

This is a difficult time for evacuees and the community as they experience uncertainty and loss.
