- Do not maintain specific staff-to-child ratios
- Are not responsible for keeping children on site or supervising them until pickup
Note: this program is not a childcare service
Parents/guardians must determine if their child can safely attend independently.
Children under 6 years of age can still participate if they have a parent or guardian with them.
Daycares and Groups
Daycares and other large groups are welcome to attend program activities. Please bring your own craft supplies specific to your group.
Temporary Location Closures
Locations may be closed due to:
- Staff shortage
- Construction
- Smoke day (Air quality 7+)
Air quality can fluctuate from time to time across the city. Once staff go home for the day, they don't return the same day - Inclement weather
Green Shack Partners
For the past few summers, Green Shacks has faced significant impacts due to an increase in the number of extreme air quality events. Unsafe air conditions (Air Quality Index levels of 7+) have required programs to shut down for days at a time, leaving children across the city without access to these free, community-based programs.
In an effort to mitigate this issue, the City of Edmonton has partnered with Community League facilities on days when it is necessary to cancel outdoor programming.
View the Open - Indoors orange Icon on the map for participating locations on days when the air quality is 7 or above.
The City of Edmonton has partnered with the Edmonton Arts Council at a variety of Green shack park locations, for the purpose of offering arts programming.
The Edmonton Arts Council (EAC) strives to support artists, organizations, festivals and the greater arts community. The EAC also raises the profile of Edmonton arts and culture and brings arts to everyday life. In support of Connections and Exchanges, Edmonton’s arts and heritage plan, the EAC brings arts programming to the city’s neighborhoods through its Green Shack Shows.
You can identify where the ECA is running shows by viewing the blue Open - Partner icon on the map. Green Shack shows rotate different locations daily.
The City of Edmonton has partnered with the Edmonton Public Library (EPL) to enhance our Green Shack programs.
Through this collaboration, EPL Summer Programmers will deliver literacy-based programming at designated Green Shack locations, expanding the variety of activities available to our participants.
You can identify where the EPL is running by viewing the blue Open - Partner icon on the map. EPL will rotate different locations daily.
The City of Edmonton has partnered with Edmonton Sport and Active Recreation Society to offer the Summer Legends Program as part of the Green Shack program.
This program is a free, drop-in athletics-based program for children aged 6–12 to build fundamental movement skills (running, jumping, throwing).
Delivered at 26 City of Edmonton Green Shack extended-hours sites during July and August 2026.
You can identify where the Summer Legends program is running by viewing the blue Open - Partner icon on the map.
Program Leaders
Program leaders are easily identified by their blue shirts and may be assisted by volunteer leaders in training. All leaders:
- Have completed a security clearance process, are trained in first aid and are certified specialists in fun
- Ensure participants play safely (parents are responsible for their children at all times and must be available in the event of an emergency)
If there is a game or activity that piques your child's interest that you would like to have included in the programming, ask the program leader.
Poor Air Quality or Extreme Weather
- Programming is available rain or shine, but may be cancelled during severe weather
- Some green shack locations will move indoors to partnering community league buildings when the air quality is 7 or higher. These locations can be viewed on the map: "Open - Indoors"
