Description and Purpose

The Naming Committee approves names for municipal facilities, new neighbourhoods, parks, and roads. This involves input from both City administration and citizens.

The Development Services Branch, part of the Urban Planning and Economy Department, provides administrative services to the Naming Committee in the form of:

  • Receiving requests from the public for names to be honoured
  • ​Creating and providing agendas to the Committee

Oliver Neighbourhood Name Change

City Council has voted to change the Oliver neighbourhood name to Wîhkwêntôwin ᐄᐧᐦᑫᐧᐣᑑᐃᐧᐣ.  Visit the Naming Committee Announcements page for details.

Naming Committee Process

  1. Urban Planning and Economy, on behalf of the Naming Committee, receives requests to name development areas, roads, municipal facilities, roadways or parks
  2. Urban Planning and Economy will consult with the applicant, civic departments, community leagues, and if applicable, the individual and/or family members of the person being honoured
  3. The application is placed on the agenda for the Naming Committee to review
  4. Urban Planning and Economy, on behalf of the Naming Committee, will notify the applicant and affected civic departments of the decision
