Capital City Clean Up, in partnership with 630 CHED radio, developed the Giants to honour Edmonton’s best, beautify the city, and deter graffiti, as vandals generally leave outdoor artwork alone.

Radio listeners of 630 CHED were active in recommending the current subjects featured in the Giants of Edmonton mural collection.

Famous Five Mural

In the early 1900s, Emily Murphy, Irene Parlby, Louise McKinney, Henrietta Muir Edwards and Nellie McClung worked tirelessly to advance the rights of women. Because of the efforts of these Alberta activists, a landmark legal decision in 1929 recognized women as persons under Canadian law.

The mural also includes images of women’s activism, from a picket for the right to vote in the early 1900s, to a 1970s celebration of International Women’s Day.

The World on Whyte Mural

Musicians, skateboarders, fashionistas, performers—these are just some of the people drawn to the shops, pubs, restaurants, bookstores and live theatre that make Whyte Avenue the entertainment heart of historic Old Strathcona.

This collage highlights the landmarks, activities and culture that identify this vibrant area as an Edmonton giant.

Beverly Beginnings Mural

Long before it amalgamated with the City of Edmonton in 1962, the community of Beverly declared itself a town in 1914. It was built on the seams of coal that ran beneath its feet, the local farmers who shopped at its stores and the small businesses that thrived on its main street.

Beverly Beginnings celebrates the 100th anniversary of Beverly as a town, and is the 11th Giants of Edmonton in our series.

Joey Moss Mural

Joey Moss was one of the Edmonton Oiler Hockey Club’s most well known and beloved members.

Joey endeared himself to the players, coaches, staff and fans of the Oilers since he began working with the team’s training staff in 1984. Since 1986, worked with the Edmonton Football Club training staff.

Joey, born with Down’s Syndrome, is an integral part of the Oilers. In 2003, Joey was presented the NHL Alumni Association’s “Seventh Man Award” which goes to NHL members “whose behind-the-scene efforts make a difference in the lives of others.”

The Sportscasters Mural

Edmonton loves its sports and over the past 50 years, five local broadcasters have delivered some of the most exciting news and events to our city, while showcasing Edmonton to the world.

Ernie Afaganis, Bryan Hall, Al McCann, Rod Phillips and John Short are now immortalized in the tenth mural of our Giants of Edmonton program, along with images of the hockey, football and Olympic games that these sportscasters covered.

Our Natural Home Mural

Our Natural Home is a depiction of Edmonton’s magnificent river valley. Every year thousands of residents and visitors take in this spectacular natural resource.

The mural illustrates the unique landscape, skyline and wildlife in the valley, highlighting the need to preserve and protect this incredible jewel in the heart of Edmonton.

Lois Hole Mural

The Honourable Lois E. Hole, CM, AOE (1929-2005) was a prominent businesswoman, lifelong advocate of education, author and co-founder, with her husband Ted, of Hole’s Greenhouses & Gardens Ltd.

An elected trustee for the Sturgeon School Division, Lois went on to serve as Chancellor of the University of Alberta and, in 2000, was installed as Alberta’s 15th Lieutenant Governor.

Lois was loved for her warmth, humanitarianism and legacy of caring for others.

Hope Hunter Mural

Boyle Street Community Services is an inner city agency committed to the promotion of social inclusion and equity for people marginalized by poverty and racism, many of whom are Aboriginal. Starting as a volunteer in 1979, Hope Hunter, MSW, RSW served as director from 1989-2008.

Hope recognized each individual’s strengths, understood the challenges they faced and, with her colleagues used a people-first practice to help people chart a meaningful path from survival to wellness.

Team Martin Mural

Canadians around the world held their breath as Team Martin swept its way to the 2010 Olympic gold in curling. To celebrate this victory, one wall of the building where skip Kevin Martin worked as an ice maker depicts him in action, shooting the winning rock to win the Olympic trials.

The other shows Kevin Martin, John Morris, Marc Kennedy, Ben Herbert and Team Martin coach Jules Owchar receiving their Olympic medals.

As of the date of the mural (since 2006), this Edmonton-based team has also won four Alberta Championships, two Brier Championships, the 2008 World Championship and 10 Grand Slam titles.

The mural depicts just some of the many contributions that Edmonton volunteers make everyday. Through their tireless work and commitment they make our city a better place to live.

The City of Edmonton proudly recognizes our local military's community contributions, both at home and abroad, toward world peace, security and stability.

Since the consolidation of Canadian Forces resources at Canadian Forces Base Edmonton in 1995, the military population has increased substantially.

This mural is to recognize the contributions of the military and their families to our city and demonstrate that we support and value our military community.

Shaping the Future

Shaping the Future focuses on the contributions and achievements in our young people, our city, our province and our country through our four post-secondary institutions: the University of Alberta, MacEwan University, NAIT and NorQuest College.

The mural illustrates the breadth of program offerings available from these institutions and recognizes the critical importance of education in building the strength of our community.
