Facility Closure

January 2026 - The John Janzen Nature Centre remains closed due to a significant flood in April 2025 that was caused by a burst pipe. The basement of the nature centre was fully submerged. The building’s electrical and HVAC systems were completely destroyed, as were much of the contents in the basement. Repair work is scheduled to begin soon and the Nature Centre is expected to reopen in summer 2026.

Summer day camps and other nature centre programs have been relocated to other City of Edmonton facilities where space and staffing allow.

A gateway to the heart of Edmonton’s River Valley, the John Janzen Nature Centre takes visitors for a walk on the wild side with programs, events and interactive exhibits designed to promote awareness and engagement with nature in an urban setting.

Book Timed Entry/Buy Membership

All patrons, including members, need to reserve their timed entry for each visit. Simply, select the desired date, available time when prompted.

Admission is paid upon arrival at the facility.

Membership Terms and Conditions

A purchased membership is non-refundable and non-transferable
There are no extensions or holds available for any John Janzen Nature Centre passes
All visitors and users of recreation and leisure centres, and attractions, are required to follow posted Facility Use Safety Guidelines, including being respectful of people and property
Annual memberships can be cancelled at any time and the unused duration of the membership will be refunded back to you
Continuous monthly memberships can be cancelled before the 15th of every month without any fees

Every visit offers a chance to connect with nature. The newly renovated facility is located in the heart of Edmonton's River Valley, a perfect natural landscape rich with wildlife and their habitats.
Along with your regular membership, you will receive 10% off regularly priced items in the John Janzen Nature Centre gift shop. To receive this discount, please advise our front desk staff of your membership to our facility.

Food Services

Snack and beverage vending machines are available on site.

Picnic and Lunch Locations

We have many outdoor locations for having a snack or lunch. Picnic tables are located in front of the facility and are first-come, first-served and not reservable.

Our “Nest” is a small seating area where families can have their snacks. Bright rainbows and interactive additions make it a fun place to take a break.

Please help us keep our facility and grounds clean and free of litter. Use the garbage, green compost, and blue recycling bins located inside and outside. We are committed to be nature friendly, so when using the Birch Trail, please do not leave litter behind.

Gift Shop

Our Gift Shop provides a great selection of unique gifts and souvenirs. Find books, toys and more for science and nature lovers of all ages.

Note: You do not need to pay facility admission to visit the gift shop.

We offer an accessible washroom at the entrance and ramps in the Tegler Discovery Zone. A lift is available to access the classrooms.

Stroller Access

The John Janzen Nature Centre is a family-friendly space. We welcome strollers and have stroller parking by the Guest Services desk.

The John Janzen Nature Centre has partnered with KultureCity® to enhance our ability to assist and accommodate guests with sensory needs.

Quiet Areas

Quiet areas on dedicated days. Please ask staff if there is a quiet area if it is required.

Headphone Zones

Headphone Zones are located at the Tegler Discovery Zone, exhibit room and the Nest where you can eat.
