Celebrating special occasions is a wonderful way to connect with your community and share traditions. As we approach the holiday and festival season, it’s important to celebrate in ways that are respectful, responsible and considerate of your neighbours.
Whether you're hosting a gathering at home or participating in an event in your local park, here are some tips to ensure everyone enjoys the occasion.
Follow City Bylaws
Ensure your event aligns with City regulations, including those on noise, fire safety and public gatherings. If you're hosting a neighbourhood event at a community league or in a public space, make sure proper permits are requested in advance.
Be Mindful of Noise
Loud music, fireworks and gatherings on private property can affect your neighbours, especially during late hours. Keep noise to a reasonable level, and if you’re planning a celebration that might be noisy, consider informing your neighbours ahead of time.
Fireworks
As celebrations are being planned, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services wants to remind everyone about the use of fireworks in the city. Please be safe when celebrating and remember, you must have a permit issued by the City of Edmonton to use fireworks within city limits.
Under the City of Edmonton’s Public Places Bylaw 14614 and Community Standards Bylaw 14600, any use of fireworks without proper permitting is illegal and subject to enforcement which can include fines of up to $10,000. Criminal charges can also be laid depending on the circumstances which can result in a criminal record, fines and the possibility of jail time.

Let your neighbours know if you’re planning a large gathering or if your local community league is hosting an event. This not only helps them prepare but can also strengthen neighbourly relations and foster a sense of inclusion.
Respect Public and Private Spaces
Ensure your celebrations don’t obstruct shared areas like sidewalks or streets. Keep activities within your property or approved event spaces, such as parkland and within community league spaces with the necessary licenses to avoid inconveniencing others.
Park Responsibly
Curbside parking is a shared resource. If you are celebrating in an area with limited parking, check the City’s residential parking program to avoid illegal parking and potential fines. Ensure your parking or that of your guests does not inconvenience your neighbours or community.
Clean Up After the Event
Whether it’s a private celebration or a community event, ensure that decorations, litter or waste are properly cleaned up to keep the neighbourhood looking its best.
