The Indigenous Youth work experience programs at the City of Edmonton provide the opportunity for Indigenous students and youth to learn more about the varied career paths at the City and the many benefits of building a career in the public service.
The Indigenous Peoples Summer Student Program provides up to 5 months of meaningful summer employment. These opportunities provide Indigenous Students with experience, exposure, and an opportunity to learn more about the diverse careers available at the City of Edmonton. These opportunities are typically advertised starting in February each year.
Indigenous Youth who are enrolled in grades 10 -12 can apply through their school for a work experience opportunity. These opportunities expose Indigenous youth to a range of career paths at the City of Edmonton from administration to areas within our parks and roads services.
Are you interested in learning more about working for the City of Edmonton while pursuing a degree or earning a credential? Indigenous Peoples can access paid and unpaid work experience opportunities as part of their educational requirements. To access these opportunities, speak to your campus career center or work integrated learning office.
Nîkânîw combines the cultural teachings and guidance of Indigenous Elders and Leaders with an aquatic pre-employment program for Indigenous youth and includes instruction of water safety education, first aid, CPR and leadership skills. These program areas complement each other, teaching a respect for Mother Earth, and especially the element of water.
